Turntable Stand

Overview

We had just moved in to our new apartment and didn't have a place to host my record collection and player. I was loosely inspired by old jukebox machines with their thick rounded edges filled with lights. This gave me the idea to use walnut to make an oversized edge band to cover the end grain of the maple panels.

Story

I had actually built a crappy version first, with cheap plywood and pine 2x2s. One poorly applied stain job later, and I decided it was time to remake it with better materials, but the current design, I liked.

I wanted to challenge myself by avoiding the use of pre-manufactured panels. This pushed me to learn about milling rough wood into square stock, gluing thin panels, and patience for sanding. Although these solid wood panels are less stable than plywood (the changes in seasonal humidity cause solid wood to expand and contract), so far everything is holding solid, 1.5 years after completion.
